I've done a major overhaul of the items we allow in the car since I learned from @safeintheseat about them being potential hazards called projectiles. Now everything we keep to entertain the kids is either strapped down or soft/very lightweight.
Here's my top recommendations for travel-safe baby toys (<1 y/o)
Highlights Hello Mini Magazines: these are a monthly subscription we ADORE
XL Teething Linking Rings: I love to use these to attach toys to the carseat handle or overhead pull bar to prevent them from falling out of reach
Dimpl: Use a pacifier clip to attach this to babe's clothes and you're set!
XL Squigz: babies love to chew on, shake & rattle, and push together/pull these apart! These spinning options are great for travel, too!
Any of the baby toys in the first list are also totally appropriate, as well!
Portable audiobook + kids podcast player: one of our most-used items! The kids love having control over what they listen to (within our boundaries, of course, and this allows us all to listen to what we want. We use this in the car during quiet time to have some screen-free time.
DVD Player (don't make fun of us :) we don't let our kids have iPads) I love to check out new DVDs from the library before a big trip!
Magic Painting Book: water + a brush is all you need!
Sticker Books (pro tip: peel off the backing to make getting the stickers off easier!)
Push-dot toys: best part is you can play with them, too :)
Mini bubble tubes: When the kids inevitably get stir crazy, use your car vents to blow bubbles back their way!
